John Y. Kao, MD,Professor of Medicine,Associate Vice Chair of Basic & Translational Research, Department of Internal MedicineCo-Director of NIH T32 Training Program in Basic and Translational Digestive Sciences,Division of Gastroenterology & HepatologyMichigan MedicineUniversity of Michigan Medical School.Dr. Kao completed his undergraduate degree at the University of California in Los Angeles, his MD degree at the University of Southern California, his Internal Medicine residency at UC Davis, and his combined Basic Research and Clinical Gastroenterology Fellowship at the University of Michigan. For the past 20 years, his research has been funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and has resulted in >100 papers. He is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI) and currently serves as a permanent member of the NIH Digestive System Host Defense, Microbial Interactions, and Immune and Inflammatory Diseases (DHMI) study sections. Dr. Kao’s research program focused on understanding the role of gut microbes in chronic inflammatory disorders with an emphasis on the homeostatic mechanisms of host–microbe interaction in the gastrointestinal tract. Current studies in this laboratory use genetically engineered and experimental mouse models to investigate several epithelial and immune pathways critical for maintaining mucosal homeostasis. Current projects funded by DoD/VA and NIH include probing the pathways involved in the development of Helicobacter-associated intestinal metaplasia and the role of epithelial NADPH oxidases, Duox2, in preventing gut bacterial translocation. Understanding these pathways may lead to new therapeutic strategies and targets for the prevention of bacterial-driven gut inflammation and its associated malignant complications. His clinical work is centered on the care of complicated refractory H. pylori infection. He also co-founded the Fecal Microbiota Transplant program for the treatment of refractory C. difficile infection. Dr. Kao is also passionate about mentoring and serves as the co-director of the NIH T32 Basic and Translational Digestive Science Research Training Program. In his spare time, he enjoys playing tennis with colleagues at Michigan Medicine and traveling with his wife, Sherry, who is Section Lead of Optometry at Kellogg Eye Center, and with their three children and miniature poodle, Boba. I am an ABIM board-certified gastroenterologist with broad scientific training in biology, biomedical engineering, and electrical engineering. I use my broad, multi-disciplinary expertise to bridge unmet needs in clinical medicine with technological innovations in engineering. As a physician, I use my access to the clinic to accelerate translation of discoveries found in the lab. My team has pioneered the clinical use of monomer peptides as targeted imaging agents to detect epithelia dysplasia. My lab has expertise in the development of peptide ligands that bind specifically to cell surface targets overexpressed in early-stage cancers. We have previously identified and validated peptides specific for EGFR, ErbB2, claudin-1, FGFR2, c-Met, Prdx1, GPC3, CD44, and EpCAM using phage display methods and structural models. We are expert at arranging peptides in multimer configurations to enhance multivalent binding interactions for increased sensitivity, specificity, and affinity. I have served as the PI for a number of NIH-funded research programs, including 1) Network for Translational Research (NTR), 2) Barrett’s Esophagus Translational Research Network (BETRNet), and 3) Bioengineering Research Partnership (BRP).Fellowship – Stanford University School of Medicine, Gastroenterology Residency – Boston University School of Medicine, Internal Medicine Graduate School – MIT (PhD)Medical School – Harvard Medical School (MD). I am initially from Cleveland, OH and have spent most of my life in Ohio before moving to Michigan. I studied Biological Sciences and Spanish at Vanderbilt University, spent one year as a research coordinator in Columbus, and attended medical school at The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Medicine. I completed my pediatric residency at Nationwide Children's Hospital/OSU and my pediatric gastroenterology fellowship at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. I also completed a Masters of Medical Education through the University of Cincinnati.I spent time during medical school participating in many Gold Humanism Honor Society events as well as endeavors such as writing poetry and learning to dance. I believe in holistic, personal care for my patients and I will be excited to get to know every child and their caregivers. I have broad interests in many types of pediatric GI processes, from reflux, constipation, and abdominal pain to more long term conditions such as celiac disease and IBD. Since I am also interested in medical education, you may meet a learner or trainee when you see come to see me, but you will always see me as well. Think of it as two doctors/brains for the price of one!In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, running, reading, and playing board games with my husband. We also love to cheer for our favorite sports teams. I am a big fan of the US Women's (and Men's) soccer teams, the Cleveland Guardians/Browns/Cavs, and of course, the Ohio State Buckeyes. What is the definition of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder that leads to pain in abdomen and changes in bowel movements.

IBS is not the same as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

When should I see an Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) doctor near Ann Arbor, MI?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) doctor near Ann Arbor, MI?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) doctors near Ann Arbor, MI?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) doctors near Ann Arbor, MI?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) doctor near Ann Arbor, MI?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) doctor near Ann Arbor, MI?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals.
